Ghana suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Nikola Vlašić’s late header denying the Black Stars a top-two finish.
Despite the setback in Philadelphia, Ghana still secured qualification for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The result, combined with England’s 2-0 victory over Panama, saw the Three Lions finish top of Group L on seven points. Croatia claimed second place with six points, while Ghana ended the group stage in third with four points.
Croatia started brightly and nearly took the lead in the 17th minute when Vlašić struck the post from the edge of the area after the Ghanaian defence was caught out of position.
The breakthrough eventually came on the half-hour mark. Petar Sučić unleashed a low drive from around 30 yards that nestled into the bottom corner, ending Ghana’s impressive defensive record at the tournament. It was the first goal the Black Stars had conceded in three World Cup matches and temporarily sent Croatia to the top of the group.
Ghana responded positively before the break and almost found an equaliser through Antoine Semenyo, whose dangerous run and low cross flashed across the face of goal without finding a teammate.
Seeking a response, head coach Carlos Queiroz introduced Opong Peprah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku at the start of the second half. The changes immediately injected energy into Ghana’s attack.
Moments after coming on, Fatawu delivered a superb cross into the penalty area, but Semenyo narrowly failed to make contact as the ball raced across goal.
The Black Stars’ persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute. Ernest Nuamah floated a free-kick into the box and Derrick Luckassen calmly volleyed home at the far post.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee review, officials determined that Kwasi Sibo, although in an offside position, had not interfered with play. The decision was overturned and Ghana were back on level terms.
The equaliser briefly lifted the Black Stars into second place in the group.
However, Croatia responded immediately. Goalkeeper Asare produced a magnificent one-handed save to tip Mario Pašalić’s powerful effort over the crossbar, but the Europeans capitalised from the resulting corner.
In the 83rd minute, Luka Modrić delivered another dangerous set-piece and Vlašić rose highest to power a header beyond Asare, with the ball bouncing in off the inside of the post to restore Croatia’s lead.
Ghana pushed desperately for another equaliser in the closing stages, but Croatia held firm to secure qualification as Group L runners-up.
