The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has ordered all unauthorised activities beneath the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange to stop immediately, warning that anyone found selling, sleeping, or engaging in illegal activities under the iconic bridge will be arrested and prosecuted.

Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey issued the directive during a working visit to the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District on Tuesday.

He led a team of officers to clear food vendors, beggars, and persons sleeping under the Korle Klottey section of the bridge.

“Anyone found selling, hawking or engaging in any form of illegal activity under the interchange will be dealt with according to law,” Allotey warned.

The team dismantled makeshift structures and cleared unauthorised activities that had turned parts of the area into an insanitary and unsafe space for both motorists and pedestrians.

Before going to the interchange operation, the Mayor led the task force to demolish illegal wooden structures erected along the shoulder of Otublohum Road, near the Circle VVIP Station.

He said such structures contributed to congestion, poor sanitation, and obstruction of public spaces.

The mayor further directed owners of drinking spots, managers of the VVIP Station, and cattle owners operating along Otublohum Road to desilt choked gutters in the area within 24 hours or face sanctions.

He said the AMA would continue to enforce its by-laws on sanitation, building permits, and public order, and urged residents, traders, and business owners to support efforts to make Accra clean, safe, and orderly.
