A Ghanaian mother and her infant baby are allegedly being held in custody after the woman was arrested upon her arrival at Accra International Airport following her repatriation from South Africa.
The development was disclosed by private legal practitioner and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who revealed that his law firm, Merton & Everett LLP, is representing the woman.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Mr Barker-Vormawor explained that the woman became the subject of a bench warrant while she was outside Ghana, allegedly over a money-related dispute that arose before she travelled to South Africa.
According to him, the matter was reported to the police in her absence, leading to the issuance of a bench warrant without her knowledge.
“Our Firm – Merton & Everett LLP – is representing a mother with an infant baby who was recently repatriated from South Africa,” he wrote.
“Apparently, before she left for SA, she had a money dispute with someone who reported her to the Police. In her absence, a bench warrant was issued for her, unknown to her.”
Mr Barker-Vormawor said immigration officials detained the woman when she arrived in Ghana on a repatriation flight and subsequently handed her over to the authorities.
“When she arrived at the airport with the repatriation flight, she was detained by immigration and arraigned at the Dansoman Circuit Court,” he stated.
The lawyer disclosed that an application for bail was filed on her behalf, but the court declined the request.
“Our application for bail for her was denied. Mother and infant baby remain in cells,” he added.
Mr Barker-Vormawor also expressed concern about the woman’s predicament, particularly after her return to Ghana under difficult circumstances.
“I wonder how she must feel, being now b3ck!” he wrote.
Details surrounding the alleged money dispute, including the specific charges before the court, have not yet been made public.
