Former Hearts of Oak Board and Management Member, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, who also served as the Gbese Mantse, has passed away after a short illness.
Known in private life as Thomas Okine, the respected traditional ruler died on Saturday, June 6, 2026, bringing to an end a distinguished career that spanned traditional leadership, sports administration, business and community service.
Nii Ayi-Bonte II played a significant role in the success of Hearts of Oak during one of the club’s most successful periods.
His involvement with the Phobians coincided with an era in which the club established itself as a dominant force in both the Ghana Premier League and African club football.
Installed as the Gbese Mantse in 2007, he combined his traditional responsibilities with an accomplished professional career.
An accountant by training, he was the founder of Lifetime Pharmacy Limited and Savemart Company Limited, businesses that contributed to Ghana’s private sector development.
Beyond his business and traditional leadership roles, Nii Ayi-Bonte II served on the Judicial Committees of the Ga Traditional Council and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
He also worked as a commissioner of the Greater Accra Regional Lands Commission, where he contributed to governance and land administration matters.
His influence extended beyond football. A passionate supporter of boxing, he was actively involved in the promotion of the sport in Ghana.
He notably managed former world champion Joseph Agbeko and played a key role in supporting and promoting professional boxing events across the country.
Nii Ayi-Bonte II leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to traditional leadership, sports development and community advancement.
He will be remembered for his contributions to Hearts of Oak, his commitment to the Ga State and his efforts to support the growth of Ghanaian sports.
