The contractor working on the Samenye Barrier–Newtown stretch of the main Jomoro road in the Western Region has moved to site to begin preparatory works ahead of full-scale construction.
The project, which has been a major priority for the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, follows years of delays after contractors working on the Samenye Barrier–Jaway Wharf road reportedly abandoned the project in 2020 without prior notice to communities or the municipal assembly.
Residents have long endured difficult commuting conditions between Samenye, Half Assini, and Newtown, a border town linking Ghana to Côte d’Ivoire. The deteriorated road has significantly increased travel time, with a journey that normally takes about 30 minutes now lasting up to two and a half hours, contributing to higher transport fares and increased prices of goods and services.
In October 2020, the road was cleared for a sod-cutting ceremony for construction to begin, but the contractors later left the site with their equipment, leaving the project stalled.

The poor state of the road triggered public frustration, with residents and motorists staging several demonstrations over the years to demand urgent government intervention.
On Sunday, May 31, 2026, contractor Kingspok Company Limited moved to site to clear the area and begin preparations for the deployment of equipment, marking the first visible step toward resumption of the project.

The development is expected to end years of poor road connectivity in the Jomoro Municipality once completed.
Dorcas Affo-Toffey has appealed to residents to cooperate with the contractor, noting that construction activities may temporarily affect livelihoods along the road corridor.
She urged traders operating along the roadside to relocate to safer areas to allow smooth execution of the project.

“I had not left you, but the time was not due. Now the time has come for us to have a good road. I urge you all to support the contractor,” she said.
She expressed optimism that the project will revive economic activity in the area, particularly benefiting transport operators and traders.
