The Ayanfuri community in the Upper Denkyira West District has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Okyere.
The chief reportedly died after accidentally shooting himself during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin held on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to reports, the incident occurred while the chief was dancing at the funeral grounds with a pump-action gun.
He allegedly discharged the firearm accidentally, sustaining a severe gunshot injury.
Nana Kwabena Okyere was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving medical care.
His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary pending preservation and further investigations.
The incident has left residents and traditional authorities in shock, with many expressing grief over the sudden death of the chief.
Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Assembly Member for the area, Castro Kwabena Ennin, who confirmed the incident, described the development as tragic and heartbreaking for the people of Ayanfuri.
