The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for immediate reforms within the Ghana Education Service (GES) after question papers arrived late at Boako MA JHS in Sefwi Wiawso, disrupting the start of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
During a visit to the centre, he expressed concern that candidates had already been seated with answer sheets but were still waiting for the question papers.
“Ordinarily, you should have been 15 minutes into the exams. Is that not right? Part of your training was that you should have been seated at 8:30 and start the exams at 9:00. But I see answer sheets without question papers, and they are now on their way,” he said.
He urged authorities to rethink the logistics behind the transportation of exam materials to prevent similar delays in future sessions.
“So we have to review how exam questions are transported to the examination centres. Director-General, since you say they are on the way, consider immediate reforms. Because you’ve taken 15 minutes of their time. I hope they don’t lose it,” he added.
Despite the setback, the Minister reassured candidates and encouraged them to remain calm and focused on their performance.
He further assured them that the examination would remain strictly within what they had been taught.
“Nothing will appear in the questions that is not part of the syllabus you studied. Is that right? Yes, sir. So be confident that you will pass. Work hard to pass,” he said.
He also reminded candidates to uphold integrity throughout the examination period.
