Former Asante Kotoko and Ghana midfielder Yussif Chibsah has called for the introduction of a quota system to ensure greater inclusion of home-grown players in the senior national team.

His comments come amid the ongoing debate on the role of local players in the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Chibsah, who captained Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, stressed that a structured quota system would help improve representation of Ghana Premier League players in the national team.

“We cannot continue to ignore the Ghana Premier League players. There must be a quota system to ensure they are represented in the Black Stars,” he stated.

Chibsah further emphasised that home-based players must be given enough opportunities to prove themselves, noting that such a move would help both player development and the growth of the domestic league.

“It’s about giving them opportunities to prove themselves. If you don’t provide the platform, how can we assess them at the highest level? We need to create a pathway to improve both the players and our local league,” he said.

Meanwhile, amid growing calls for greater inclusion of home-based players, Carlos Queiroz has assured that players in the Ghana Premier League and other domestic competitions will be given fair opportunities in the Black Stars setup, with selections to be based primarily on performance.

The Black Stars’ final squad for the World Cup is expected to be announced on June 1.
