The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported a sharp rise in road traffic fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, with 130 people losing their lives between January and March.
According to figures released by the Service, it responded to 211 road traffic accidents during the period, representing a significant increase compared to the 144 cases recorded in the same period in 2025.
The surge in crashes has been accompanied by a worrying rise in casualties. In the first quarter of 2025, the 144 accidents resulted in 86 deaths and 500 injuries.
However, in 2026, the 211 accidents led to 130 deaths and 932 injuries — nearly doubling the number of injured victims.
The data highlights a growing road safety concern, with both the frequency of accidents and the severity of outcomes increasing within a year.
The GNFS has not yet detailed the specific causes behind the spike, but the figures underscore the urgent need for stricter road safety enforcement, improved driver behaviour, and heightened public awareness to curb the trend.
