A driver and his mate have narrowly escaped death after armed robbers attacked a cargo truck on the Bibiani–Goaso road near Sereso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The victim, Mohammed Yakubu, 60, was driving a blue-black Mitsubishi cargo truck with registration number AW 621-12 from Akodie towards Kumasi when the incident occurred, just minutes from where Berekum Chelsea FC was recently attacked.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers had blocked the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and opened fire as the truck approached, hitting the driver in the abdomen.
An eyewitness, Sampson Dwumah, told Adom News that the mate rushed to a nearby community to raise the alarm, prompting residents to respond quickly and transport the victim on a tricycle to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment.
Residents of Sereso say they are living in fear due to repeated armed robbery incidents along the stretch and are calling on the Inspector General of Police to deploy regular checkpoints to improve security.
Authorities are yet to comment on the attack as investigations continue.
