The grandfather of slain Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong has expressed deep disappointment in the management of the club, questioning the circumstances that led to the player’s death.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Kasiebo Is Tasty after the tragic robbery attack that claimed the life of the footballer, Nana Kyei Baffour said the family first heard of the incident through informal channels rather than official communication from the club.

He noted that he initially struggled to believe the news and had expected the team’s management to formally inform the family.

“My nephew called me on Monday dawn to inform me about what had happened, adding that the player was affectionately known within the family as ‘Iniesta’. I wasn’t convinced when I heard the news, so I was expecting to be officially informed by the management,” he said.

According to him, the delay in communication has compounded the family’s grief, as they are yet to receive clear updates from the club.

Describing the late footballer as disciplined and respectful, Nana Baffour said the family has lost a promising young man. “He is a very noble and disciplined young man… we have really lost a gem,” he lamented, noting that the player was unmarried and had no children.

He, however, directed strong criticism at the club’s management, questioning why adequate safety measures were not put in place for the team after their match.

“Why didn’t they look for a place to host them after the match so they could return in the morning?” he asked.

He argued that the long-distance travel after a demanding game exposed the players to unnecessary risk.

“Football is a business, and they are making money from the players. How can they travel from Berekum to Samreboi to play a 90-minute game and they couldn’t even get them a place to sleep?” he queried.

Nana Baffour further criticised the lack of security arrangements for the team, insisting that players should have been protected, especially given their status.

“How can a big team like Berekum Chelsea move without security? He is a big star. They should have at least been given a security escort,” he added.
