A sustained intelligence-led surveillance by police has led to the arrest of a suspect who operates a mobile phone snatching syndicate.

The suspect Joseph Nii Amamu Offei, also known as Gaza alias Hero, was initially arrested around Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on Saturday, April 4, 2026 and was under interrogation at the Kaneshie Police Station.

However, it was revealed that one of his victims had filed a complaint at the Darkuman Police Station, causing his transfer to that station, where he is currently assisting with investigations.

According to Citi News’s sources, the suspect would approach unsuspecting individuals and feign familiarity with them. He would subsequently attempt to give out his number to the victim for onward submission to a relative, but intentionally mention an inactive telephone number.

He will then request the victim’s phone under the guise of entering the correct digit, but will speed off on his motorbike.

Security sources say several surveillance cameras have captured the suspect on multiple occasions.

During his arrest, five assorted mobile phones were retrieved from him.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned before the court on Monday.

The suspect is reported to have been arrested and jailed following a robbery incident involving large sums of various denominations of cash, some three years ago.
