Berekum Chelsea have confirmed that their team bus was attacked by armed robbers while returning from a league assignment in Samreboi, leaving one player seriously injured.
Chelsea were hosted by FC Samartex in a Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture at DUN’s Park, a game they lost 1–0 on Sunday.
In an official statement released the same day, the club disclosed that the incident occurred en route to Berekum after the match.
According to the statement, a group of armed men blocked the road, forcing the team’s bus to halt before launching a violent attack.
The assailants, described as masked and armed with guns and assault rifles, reportedly opened fire on the vehicle as the driver attempted to reverse to safety. The sudden ambush forced players and technical staff to abandon the bus and flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.
The club confirmed that one player sustained serious injuries during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, with arrangements underway for a transfer to a regional medical facility for further care.
Despite the traumatic ordeal, Berekum Chelsea expressed appreciation to the police patrol team for their swift response, as well as members of the media for quickly disseminating information.
The club also acknowledged the support of residents of Ashiresu, who provided temporary shelter for players and officials in the aftermath of the attack.
Further gratitude was extended to Bibiani Gold Stars for their support, as well as the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt intervention during the crisis.
The club assured supporters and the general public that updates will be provided as the situation develops, while expressing hope for the swift recovery of the injured player.
