The University for Development Studies (UDS) has stated that its MPhil student, Mr. Prosper Kaba, was mistakenly identified in both traditional and social media reports as being connected to a recent robbery case in Tamale.
In a clarification issued by the Office of the Registrar, the University explained that Mr. Kaba is not a suspect but rather a victim of misidentification, a situation it says has caused harm to his reputation and emotional well-being.
According to the statement, UDS became aware of several publications and online posts that circulated Mr. Kaba’s photograph alongside claims linking him to the robbery.
The University firmly rejected those claims, stressing that he “is not a suspect or participant in the said criminal act, but rather a victim of the incident.”
UDS further described the situation as a troubling case of misrepresentation, noting that the use of his image in connection with criminal allegations has led to considerable emotional and psychological distress.
The University pointed out that Mr. Kaba, who appeared as the first person on the left in widely shared images, was wrongly associated with individuals alleged to have been involved in the robbery. It added that the photos in question were initially released to the media by the Ghana Police Service.

UDS also raised concerns about inconsistencies in some reports, indicating that one of the actual suspects may have been left out in certain publications, thereby affecting the accuracy of the information presented.
The University is therefore calling on all media organisations that carried the incorrect reports to withdraw them, issue an unqualified apology to Mr. Kaba, and update their stories to clearly reflect that he is a victim, not a suspect.
It also urged journalists to uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness and responsibility, particularly in cases that carry serious consequences for individuals’ reputations.
