The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has expressed deep sorrow over the recent boat accident on the Volta Lake that claimed several lives, including women and children.
In a statement issued on April 10, 2026, the sector Minister, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.
“The Ministry extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” the statement said.
The Ministry also disclosed that immediate steps are being taken to support affected families. The Minister has directed the Department of Social Welfare to work closely with district authorities to reach out to victims’ families.
According to the statement, the intervention will focus on providing psychosocial support while assessing urgent needs to help ease the burden caused by the incident.
In addition, the Ministry reiterated the need for stricter adherence to safety measures in water transport to prevent similar tragedies.
“MOGCSP further reiterates the importance of safety measures in water transport and calls for strengthened adherence to safety protocols,” the statement noted.
The Ministry assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, especially in times of crisis.
It also pledged solidarity with all affected persons, emphasizing that support systems will be strengthened to ensure no one is left behind.
The Volta Lake incident has sparked renewed concerns about safety standards in water transport across the country.
