The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has received a significant boost in its efforts to strengthen journalism in the region, following the intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in allocating land for the establishment of a Press Centre.

The development came to light during a courtesy call by the new regional executives on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace during the Awukudae festival. The visit was intended to express appreciation and seek his continued support.

Chairman of the Ashanti Regional GJA, Kofi Adu Domfeh, said the visit was primarily to thank Otumfuo for his decisive intervention after the Association lost its previous land intended for the Press Centre.

According to him, a two-storey building that had been under construction for the purpose was demolished under unclear circumstances, prompting the new executives to investigate.

“We consulted the Lands Commission, and we were informed that the issue had come to Otumfuo, who was not happy about it. He instructed that a new space should be allocated to journalists in the Ashanti Region,” he explained.

He described the gesture as critical, noting that securing land for a press centre would provide journalists with a permanent base to operate and coordinate their work.

“The most important aspect of this visit is to appreciate the gesture of the king in making sure that journalists in the region have a space we can call our own to run our affairs,” he added.

The delegation also used the visit to formally introduce the new regional executives to Otumfuo and seek his blessings for a successful tenure.

“We know we cannot do this on our own. We need the support of the king in everything that we will be doing as executives,” the Chairman noted.

The team further expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for hosting the 29th GJA Awards in Kumasi, describing the event as historic and a major success that elevated the image of journalists nationwide.

Seasoned broadcaster Dr. Kwame Adinkra, who accompanied the delegation, said the allocation of land could help address the perception that the GJA is overly Accra-centric.

“Most often, it looks like GJA exists only in Accra, but now that Otumfuo has promised us land, having our own office here will go a long way to strengthen the Association in the region,” he said.

The Chairman also appealed for corporate and individual support towards the construction of the facility.

“As we start the journey of rebuilding the Association, the press centre is close to our hearts. We will need support. Already, Fidelity Bank has supported us with GH₵50,000, and we hope others will come on board,” he added.
