Chairman of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Eric Afful, has ruled out any plans to reintroduce the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), insisting that Ghanaians have already rejected the tax.
He acknowledged that government requires revenue to fund ongoing projects but stressed that alternative measures would be explored instead of reintroducing unpopular taxes.
Mr Afful noted that levies such as the E-Levy and the COVID-19 levy were widely opposed and contributed to public dissatisfaction, adding that government would not impose measures that burden citizens.
However, the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, argued that the country needs increased revenue mobilisation and backed calls for the reintroduction of the E-Levy and expansion of the tax net.
He emphasised the need for transparency in the use of tax revenue and cautioned against politicising taxation issues.
