The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced plans to introduce a reporting system that will allow passengers to report drivers engaging in reckless driving.

Reckless driving has become a growing concern on Ghana’s roads, particularly within the commercial transport sector. Passengers often face a dilemma: speak up and risk confrontation or stay silent and compromise their safety.

Those who caution drivers are frequently met with hostility, with some drivers ignoring concerns or even asking passengers to alight abruptly. This discourages passengers from speaking up and leaves many feeling powerless in situations where they should feel protected.

An incident along the Tesano–Abeka stretch yesterday highlights the issue. A driver reportedly drove recklessly, and when passengers attempted to caution him, he became angry, ordering them to either get down or remain silent, sparking confusion in the vehicle.

In response, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, told Adom News that the union plans to introduce monitoring systems to track driver behavior. This will make it easier for passengers and authorities to report reckless driving.

He advised that passengers report incidents to the vehicle’s station or take note of the driver’s car number. Passengers are also encouraged to report rude or aggressive behavior to the nearest police station. In cases where a police station is not nearby, he urged passengers to stay calm and avoid escalating tensions, as confrontations could distract the driver and cause accidents.

Meanwhile, several Ghanaians speaking to Adom News linked the country’s road accidents directly to reckless driving, calling for stronger accountability and safety measures.
