The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in selected parts of Accra.
Approved by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), the exercise aims to improve the reliability, stability, and capacity of electricity supply in the city.
The first phase will involve replacing and upgrading 12 power transformers across six primary substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi. The transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, enhancing load-handling capacity and reducing overloads in these fast-growing communities.
The exercise is scheduled to start on Wednesday, 8th April 2026, and is expected to conclude by Friday, 10th April 2026. ECG warns that brief, planned power outages will occur to ensure personnel safety and the successful completion of the upgrades.
A detailed schedule of activities, outage periods, and affected communities will be published on ECG’s official channels. Customers are advised to take note and make necessary arrangements.
ECG reassures the public that every effort will be made to minimise disruptions, stressing that this upgrade is a critical step toward strengthening infrastructure and improving electricity service across Accra.
