Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for suggesting that the LGBTQ bill is not a priority.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, the MP described the President’s position as hypocritical, arguing that it contradicts earlier assurances given to Ghanaians.

“The President cannot single-handedly determine national priorities, especially on an issue that reflects the will of the majority,” he said.

Acquah noted that while the President has highlighted basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter as pressing concerns, it would be unrealistic to expect that all these challenges could be fully addressed within the remaining years of his administration.

He further argued that the governing party has sufficient representation in Parliament to facilitate the passage of the bill if there is genuine commitment. He added that explanations attributing delays to parliamentary processes are no longer convincing under the current composition of Parliament.

Citing findings from the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Acquah claimed that over 90% of Ghanaians support the passage of the bill and want it passed as soon as possible.

He urged the government to be consistent and transparent, accusing the ruling party of misleading the public on the matter.
