The Ghana Football Association is reportedly finalizing plans to appoint a new head coach for the Black Stars following the dismissal of Otto Addo, after disappointing results that included losses to Austria and Germany during the March international window.
Local media reports indicate that the GFA has shortlisted three candidates—Carlos Queiroz, Fernando Santos, and Paulo Bento—for an interim role leading the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, who has managed national teams including Portugal and Iran, is known for his tactical discipline, while Santos, the coach behind Portugal’s 2016 European Championship triumph, brings proven experience at the highest level. Bento, a former South Korea coach, is recognized for his structured, possession-based approach.
The shortlist appears aimed at providing a short-term solution, with Saudi Arabia’s head coach, Hervé Renard, reportedly under consideration for a permanent role after the World Cup.
The GFA’s two-phase strategy seeks to ensure immediate stability for the squad, followed by a long-term rebuild to restore Ghana’s competitive edge internationally.
Consultations with government authorities are expected to conclude soon, with the final coaching appointment likely to be announced in the coming weeks.
The Black Stars are set to regroup in May to prepare for friendly matches against Mexico and Wales on June 2, ahead of their fifth World Cup appearance. Ghana has been drawn into Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by matches against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
