The Minority caucus in Parliament has embarked on a three-day tour of the Ahafo Region to engage cocoa farmers over the government’s recent reduction of cocoa prices and the challenges farmers are facing.

During courtesy calls to the chiefs of Kukuom, Kenyasi No. 1, and Hwidiem, the Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri expressed the caucus’s concerns.

He noted that this is the first time in the country’s multi-party democratic history that a government has reduced cocoa prices without considering the hardships such a decision imposes on farmers.

Highlighting campaign promises made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under President John Dramani Mahama regarding cocoa, he said the government’s price reduction, without valid justification, compelled the Minority caucus to engage farmers directly.

“The purpose of this tour is to interact with cocoa farmers, provide support, and ensure they understand that the current government’s decision does not reflect their best interests,” he said, assuring that nothing would prevent the caucus from continuing its engagement nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Paramount Chief of the Hwidiem Traditional Council, Osuodumgya Barima Apea-Dwaah Boafo, said the government’s actions are unfair to cocoa farmers, especially in light of promises made during the 2024 election campaign.

Similarly, the Paramount Chief of the Kenyasi No. 1 Traditional Council, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri, commended the Minority caucus for taking proactive steps to tour the country and engage farmers on this critical issue.
