A total of 59 onion trucks belonging to Ghanaian traders have reportedly been locked up in Nigeria, preventing their return to Ghana amid an escalating trade dispute.
The development follows recent tensions at the Adjen Kotoku Market in Accra, where local traders allegedly blocked Nigerian sellers from offloading 16 trucks of onions.
Chairman of the Onion Sellers Association, Imoro Asutam, revealed that each truck is valued at approximately 5 billion old Ghana cedis, raising fears of substantial financial losses.
He further disclosed that the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has invited key stakeholders to an emergency meeting to help resolve the impasse.
According to him, the dispute was triggered after some Nigerian traders allegedly breached existing market arrangements by attempting to sell larger quantities of onions.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Accra Onion Sellers Association, Alhaji Osman Muhammed Sidi, has called on government to invest in local onion production to reduce dependence on imports and prevent similar conflicts in the future.
