The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced that the planned rehabilitation of the Kaneshie footbridge is expected to take between six and nine months to complete. The bridge was closed on Thursday, April 2, to allow for urgent repairs due to its deteriorated condition.

Speaking on Channel One on April 6, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at AMA, said the footbridge is part of a wider road improvement initiative in the area. He noted that this rehabilitation will be the first major overhaul since the bridge’s construction.

“Currently, the state of the bridge requires extensive work. Experts estimate that the project will take between six to nine months. The surrounding roads will also be closed for drainage works so that the entire area can be properly upgraded. Once completed, the bridge will be fully functional for pedestrians and daily commuters,” he said.

Mr. Ankrah assured the public that the renovations would significantly strengthen the bridge, extending its lifespan. “The type of work being undertaken will enhance durability, and we are hopeful the bridge will last ten years or more,” he added.

Meanwhile, Frank Nkansah, Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central, attributed the footbridge’s deteriorating condition partly to long-standing occupation by traders, which had hindered routine maintenance.

He noted that critical components, including barriers and structural footings, had suffered extensive damage, showing visible signs of rust and wear.
