Commercial transport operators in Ghana have issued a two-day ultimatum to the government to stabilise fuel prices, warning that failure to act could lead to a 20 percent hike in transport fares.

In a press statement dated March 29, representatives from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and other driver associations said the rising cost of fuel is severely affecting operations and threatening the sustainability of their businesses.

The operators described the situation as critical, stressing that continued fuel price volatility could have widespread economic consequences. They are calling for immediate government intervention, including measures to stabilise fuel prices, reduce taxes and levies, and improve transparency in fuel pricing.

The group warned that if no action is taken within the two-day timeframe, they will be forced to increase lorry fares by 20 percent, further burdening commuters already facing economic hardship.

Despite the warning, the operators expressed willingness to engage government in dialogue to find a lasting solution to the fuel crisis.

PRESS RELEASE

29/3/2026

*Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana gives Government two days ultimatum.

The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana are issuing a stern warning to the Ministry of Energy and Government to take immediate and drastic measures to stabilize fuel prices in the April window. The continued volatility and upward trend in fuel prices are crippling our operations, and we will not sit idly by while our businesses are threatened.

As the government is well aware, the transport sector is the backbone of Ghana’s economy, and any instability in fuel supply or pricing has far-reaching consequences for the entire nation. We have been patient and flexible, but our patience is wearing thin.

If the government fails to act decisively to ensure fuel stability, we will be left with no choice but to increase lorry fares by 20%. This increase will not only affect our members but also the Ghanaian public, who are already struggling to make ends meet.

We demand that the government:

  • Takes immediate action to stabilize fuel prices
  • Reduces taxes and levies on fuel to make it more affordable
  • Increases transparency in fuel pricing to prevent exploitation

We are willing to work with the government to find a solution, but we will not be ignored. We urge the government to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and take concrete steps to address the fuel crisis.

*Signed,
Samuel Amoah.
