Following the dismissal of Otto Addo as head coach of the Ghana national football team, politician Sammi Awuku has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to appoint a local coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking on Accra-based UTV, Awuku said the GFA should have reviewed the team’s technical direction earlier, especially after Ghana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He described AFCON as a critical preparatory stage for the World Cup, allowing teams to fine-tune their performance against top African sides.
According to him, Ghana’s failure to qualify deprived the Black Stars of that essential preparation, making the current situation even more challenging.
With Otto Addo now out, Awuku advised against hiring a foreign coach, arguing that the limited time before the tournament would make it difficult for an external manager to assess the team and build cohesion. He recommended appointing a young local coach who already understands the players and the team dynamics.
“From now until the World Cup in June, they should appoint a young local coach from the country who knows the players,” he said.
