Ghana coach Otto Addo has sounded the alarm over his team’s defensive vulnerabilities following the Black Stars’ heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in an international friendly, highlighting both structural flaws and psychological fragility.

The defeat in Vienna exposed Ghana’s struggles at the back, with the team initially holding its own before unraveling and conceding five goals in a performance that left the squad visibly shaken.

Addo was candid about the deeper issues behind the scoreline, pointing to the team’s mental resilience under pressure as a key area for improvement.

“Defensively, we have problems. We need stability, especially psychologically. After the third goal, we must keep our heads up and maintain intensity,” he said after the match.

The coach acknowledged the emotional impact on his players but emphasized that such setbacks require stronger responses on the pitch.

“I understand the players were disappointed, but these are moments when we must step up. We have to overcome this. Let’s focus on the defence,” Addo added.

Ghana conceded two early goals that Addo deemed avoidable before Austria capitalized on a series of lapses to score three more. The manner in which the goals were conceded, he said, underscored both technical shortcomings and a drop in concentration as the match slipped away.

“The first two goals were easy to prevent. For goals three, four, and five, there were significant defensive issues. We have to address this psychologically,” he admitted.

Addo’s assessment painted a picture of a side struggling not only with organisation but also with focus during decisive phases — an issue that could prove costly in more competitive fixtures.

“The next step is to stay strong and focused. The players must maintain concentration so this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Ghana now turn their attention to a friendly against Germany in Stuttgart on Monday, March 30, with kick-off scheduled for 18:45 GMT. These matches form part of the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
