The UK High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration on gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and inclusive development.

The meeting provided a platform for both parties to discuss shared priorities and strategies to strengthen cooperation between the UK and the Ministry.

During the engagement, Dr. Lartey announced that a Legislative Instrument had been presented to Parliament to implement the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, aimed at fostering inter-agency collaboration and improving service delivery across the sector.

She also highlighted ongoing reforms under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, noting that a nationwide reassessment is underway to increase beneficiaries from 350,000 to 400,000 households. Plans are also being developed to support households graduating from LEAP with sustainable income opportunities, including the Adwumawura Programme.

The Minister emphasized the need to strengthen social protection systems through enhanced linkages, interoperability, and shock-responsive mechanisms to better respond to crises.

Discussions further focused on women’s economic empowerment, with attention on skill training, improved access to capital, and support for entrepreneurial initiatives. Menstrual hygiene and the local production of sanitary pads were highlighted as critical areas to boost girls’ confidence, dignity, and opportunities for women-led enterprises.

H.E. Rogg commended Dr. Lartey for her leadership and dedication to promoting gender equality and social protection. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to provide technical and financial support to the Ministry, including initiatives aimed at building the capacity of young women and girls to enhance their participation in economic and public life.

Both leaders expressed optimism that the partnership would deliver inclusive and sustainable outcomes for vulnerable populations across Ghana.
