The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has explained its decision to call up a single replacement following the injuries to two forwards ahead of the Black Stars’ upcoming friendlies against Austria and Germany.
On Tuesday, the GFA confirmed that Inaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante had withdrawn from the squad after sustaining injuries at their respective clubs.
In response, 22-year-old Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer of Hamburger SV was drafted into the team.
Speaking in an interview, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained that Königsdörffer was already on a standby list, which enabled a swift replacement once the injured players were ruled out.
“What we do normally is that players are always on standby. So immediately when we decided not to involve them in this camping, we got in touch with the club of Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
Twum added that arrangements were quickly finalised to bring the young forward into the squad in Vienna.
“We spoke to Hamburg, and they assured us that they would speak to the player… we ended up inviting him because he was on the standby list. Straight away, we sent him a ticket, and he arrived late last night,” he said.
Königsdörffer arrived in camp on Tuesday and has already taken part in his first training session with the team. He is expected to train further with the squad ahead of the first match.
The Black Stars will face Austria on Friday, March 27, at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, before travelling to Stuttgart to take on Germany on Monday, March 30.
