Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has emphasized that new players in the Black Stars squad will have to compete for a starting spot ahead of the team’s upcoming friendlies.
Coach Otto Addo recently named a 26-man squad for matches against Austria and Germany later this month, which features four debutants: Derrick Luckassen, Marvin Senaya, Daniel Agyei, and Patrick Pfeiffer.
Asante Twum highlighted that while the inclusion of fresh talent is important, the focus remains on building a robust squad for the 2026 World Cup.
“We want to build a strong team. We want to get to a point where we are without our senior players, and we will be able to play comfortably,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“We have spoken to several players, and we are glad to have them, but they will have to compete for a place on the team.
“We want to create a competitive environment, and we want every player to bring competition to the team, and those who are around must also improve themselves, because it will also help to create a competitive side,” Asante Twum added.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Austria in Vienna on March 27, before traveling to take on Germany on March 30, 2026. These fixtures are part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
In warm-up matches ahead of the tournament, Ghana will meet Mexico and Wales in May and June, respectively, before tackling Panama, England, and Croatia in Group L at the World Cup.
