Lawyers for former Freddie Blay, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, have moved quickly to challenge a court decision that led to his remand in police custody over a land dispute at Kitase.

Accra-based Citi News reported that Mr Blay’s legal team will file an appeal on March 17 at the Koforidua High Court, seeking to overturn the ruling by the Akropong Circuit Court and secure his release while the case continues.

Mr Blay was remanded on March 16 after appearing before the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with a dispute over a parcel of land at Kitase. The matter reportedly began when an individual claiming ownership of the land lodged a complaint with the police, alleging unlawful activity on the property.

Police subsequently invited the former NPP chairman to assist with investigations, but the situation escalated, leading to his arrest and arraignment before the court. After hearing the initial details, the court ordered that he be held in custody as investigations proceed.

Reacting to the development, his lawyer, Gregory Asiedu, described the decision as troubling, insisting the remand was unwarranted.

According to him, the legal team is confident a higher court will take a different view of the matter. “The appeal will be filed at the High Court in Koforidua,” he said, adding that they intend to push for a review of the remand order and apply for bail for their client.
