Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH) has joined the global engineering community in commemorating World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, observed annually on March 4 and endorsed by UNESCO.

In a statement issued to mark the occasion, the Institution underscored the critical role engineers play in Ghana’s development, noting that the profession remains central to infrastructure delivery, environmental protection, industrial expansion and technological advancement.

According to IET-GH, Ghanaian engineers continue to provide practical solutions to pressing national challenges, including climate change, sanitation, energy transition, resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban development.

The Institution reaffirmed its commitment to upholding ethical standards, promoting innovation and strengthening professional excellence within the engineering sector.

It also encouraged young people to pursue careers in engineering, stressing that Ghana’s long-term development will depend largely on their expertise, creativity and integrity.

As part of the commemoration, IET-GH commended engineers serving across key institutions and sectors, including energy, roads, water, housing, mining, research and academia.

Among the organisations acknowledged were the Volta River Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana Grid Company Limited, Ghana Highways Authority, Ghana Water Company Limited and the Ghana Standards Authority, among others in both the public and private sectors.

The Institution further highlighted the collaboration between engineers, government, academia, industry partners and development organisations, describing such partnerships as essential to strengthening policy frameworks and advancing sustainable infrastructure delivery.

IET-GH reiterated its dedication to capacity building, research, innovation and responsible engineering practice in line with national priorities and global sustainability targets.

The statement, signed by the President of IET-GH, Engr. Davor Wonder Salami, urged stakeholders to sustain investment in engineering education and professional development, describing them as critical pillars for achieving Ghana’s development goals.
