The Government of Ghana has issued a travel advisory for its nationals in Mexico following violent incidents linked to the killing of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The operation by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026, has sparked coordinated cartel reprisals across several states, resulting in armed clashes, vehicle arson, road blockages, casualties, and significant disruption to daily activities.

Affected areas include Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacan, and Oaxaca.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Ghanaian citizens travelling to or residing in these regions to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel.

Nationals are advised to maintain regular contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for consular assistance if needed.

In its advisory, the Government of Ghana expressed solidarity with the Government of Mexico and confidence in the Mexican authorities’ ability to restore order.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
