The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned recent acts of student violence that marred the just-ended Zonal Senior High School Athletics Competition in the region.

In a letter dated February 21, 2026, addressed to all heads of senior high and senior high technical schools in the Central Region, the Regional Director of Education described the incidents, captured in widely circulated videos, as disturbing, reprehensible, and wholly unacceptable.

According to the Directorate, the violent conduct undermines the core values of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition that school sporting activities are meant to promote. It stressed that violence in any form has no place in school-sponsored programmes.

The statement further noted that such actions constitute a direct violation of the GES Code of Conduct for Students during Sporting Activities, particularly the policy requiring strict supervision of students during off-campus programmes, including the mandatory 20-to-1 student-teacher ratio.

Management disclosed that thorough investigations have commenced in collaboration with the affected schools and District Directors of Education to identify all persons involved. The Ghana Police Service has also been formally notified and is expected to take appropriate action where criminal conduct is established.

The Regional Directorate warned that students found culpable will face severe disciplinary sanctions under GES regulations and may also be subject to criminal prosecution where necessary.

School heads have consequently been directed to reinforce a zero-tolerance policy for violence, strengthen supervision and security at school programmes, ensure strict compliance with escort policies, and promote counselling initiatives to instil discipline and responsible conduct among students.

The GES reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the safety, integrity, and moral authority of educational institutions across the region.
