A fierce market fire has destroyed more than 40 temporary stalls at Nadowli in the Upper West Region, leaving several traders counting their losses.

The blaze broke out on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a distress call to the Nadowli Fire Station at about 1:15 p.m.

Firefighters responded swiftly and worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby shops and residential buildings.

Although the fire ravaged between 40 and 50 temporary stalls, the timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) helped contain the situation before it escalated into a larger disaster.

Personnel initially faced challenges with water supply, which slowed early containment efforts.

However, with support from the Nadowli District Chief Executive (DCE) and the deployment of a DRIP water tanker, firefighters reinforced their operations and intensified efforts to bring the blaze under control.

The fire was contained at approximately 2:28 p.m. and fully extinguished at 4:20 p.m.

No casualties were reported, but affected traders suffered significant losses, as goods stored in the makeshift stalls were destroyed.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established and is under investigation.

Authorities have urged traders to observe fire safety measures, particularly in densely populated market areas where temporary structures can accelerate the spread of fire.
