The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has begun distributing 15,000 exercise books to selected basic and Junior High schools in the Sunyani East and Sunyani West municipalities as part of its community support initiative.

So far, 5,000 exercise books have been distributed to three beneficiary schools: UENR Basic School, Odomase Presbyterian Junior High School, and Mmerɛ Dane Basic School, all located within the Sunyani East and Sunyani West Municipalities.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the President of the UENR SRC, Abdulai Agyei Zakaria, said the initiative aims to support basic school education and ease the burden on pupils and parents who struggle to provide essential learning materials.

“Education is a shared responsibility, and as student leaders, we believe giving back to surrounding communities is part of our core mandate,” he said. Zakaria added that the SRC will continue the distribution exercise until all 15,000 exercise books have been delivered to the selected schools.

Meanwhile, the Headmistress of Odomase Presbyterian Junior High School, Madam Mavis Affowaa, expressed gratitude to the UENR SRC for the donation, describing it as timely and thoughtful. She noted that the exercise books will significantly help pupils, particularly those attending school without notebooks, thereby improving participation and learning outcomes. She also appealed to non-governmental organisations, government, and well-meaning individuals to support the school with infrastructure, stressing that the current building is in a deplorable state.

Similarly, the Head Teacher of Mmerɛ Dane Basic School, Mr Gilbert Asomah, commended the SRC for the donation but called on the Education Directorate and the Municipal Assembly to construct a fence wall around the school. He explained that the absence of a fence allows students to stray onto the nearby lorry road and permits animals and unauthorized persons to enter the school compound during class hours, negatively affecting teaching and learning.
