Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has expressed hope that Antoine Semenyo can carry his impressive club form into the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Semenyo, who joined Manchester City from Bournemouth in a £65 million transfer, has been in sensational form this season, scoring 12 Premier League goals.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Vanderpuye said Ghanaians are eager to see the striker replicate his sharpness and consistency on the international stage.
“He’s playing wonderfully well. I would just pray that he’s able to transfer whatever he’s doing with Manchester City to the Black Stars. Up to now, he’s not been able to convince Ghanaians so much about his prolific performance when it comes to the Black Stars,” he said.
The former MP also suggested that Semenyo’s English roots could provide extra motivation in high-profile matches.
“You know he was born in England, and I think it is good that is enough motivation for him to perform better when he plays the English,” Vanderpuye added.
Since making his Ghana debut in 2022, Semenyo has earned 32 caps and scored three goals, featuring in both the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana’s World Cup Group L campaign begins against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, followed by a clash with England in Boston, and concludes with a match against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.
As part of their build-up, the Black Stars will face Austria and Germany in friendly matches this March.
