The Institute for Education Studies has urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to adopt strategic, evidence-based measures to significantly enhance performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a press statement dated February 4, 2026, the Institute highlighted an analysis of the 2025 WASSCE results, which revealed persistent poor performance in core subjects, particularly Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, alongside disparities across regions and school categories.
While some marginal improvements were noted, the Institute said the overall results point to systemic challenges, including gaps in instructional quality, examination preparedness, learning resources, and supervision.
The statement called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to publicly outline a comprehensive action plan addressing curriculum coverage, teacher capacity, student academic support, monitoring and accountability, teaching and learning resources, and the use of data-driven interventions.
The Institute also stressed the importance of improved student welfare, guidance, and counselling services to enhance focus and academic performance.
Signing the statement, Executive Director Dr. Peter Anti Partey emphasised that improving WASSCE outcomes is critical to Ghana’s human capital development. He called for transparent reporting, measurable targets, and decisive leadership to secure better results in 2026.
