Three labour unions representing staff in public universities have declared an indefinite strike with immediate effect, citing what they describe as unfair treatment and breaches of existing agreements by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and government.

In a statement dated February 3, 2026, the unions said the strike follows the FWSC’s unilateral decision to alter conditions of service, particularly the withdrawal of overtime allowances for senior staff, which were replaced with a call-in allowance.

The unions argue that a 2021 agreement signed with the FWSC and government recognised overtime allowances for senior staff. However, the University of Ghana halted these payments last year—a move they say has since been extended to other institutions, including UHAS and UDS, despite ongoing negotiations.

The unions further protested the failure of government to pay salary arrears and allowances spanning four years, following the upgrading of NAFTI, GIL, and GIJ into the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

They also raised concerns over the non-payment of five months’ Tier Two pension contributions from August to December 2024, demanding that penalties be applied as required under pension regulations.

The unions said the decision to strike was taken reluctantly but stressed that fairness and respect for agreed conditions of service remain non-negotiable.
