Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia, described as distressing and unclear.
In a Facebook post, the Minister disclosed that Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, has assured him of full cooperation in the pursuit of truth and justice.
Mr Ablakwa said the visit fulfils a promise he made to Ghanaians to personally follow up on the student’s death. He is leading a six-member delegation, including senior directors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert, and a pathologist to assist with investigations.
Two family members of the deceased, who were expected to join the delegation, were initially unable to travel on Saturday night due to delays in visa processing. The Minister confirmed that their visas were issued on Sunday, and they are scheduled to travel later that night to join the team on Monday morning.
Responding to circulating social media claims, Mr Ablakwa clarified that all family members and experts accompanying the delegation are fully funded by the Ministry. He dismissed allegations of extortion and fake ticket issuance as unfounded.
The delegation is expected to hold key meetings on Monday with Latvia’s Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case. The visit aims to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death and help bring closure to his family.
