The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed claims circulating on social media about its handling of efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unclear circumstances in Latvia, describing the allegations as false and misleading.
In a press release dated February 2, 2026, the Ministry said it has remained in close contact with the family and has never demanded money from them to facilitate travel to Europe.
“The Ministry wishes to categorically reject and correct the false, misleading, and unfounded assertions contained in the said video,” the statement added.
The response follows a viral video in which a woman claiming to be Nana Agyei Ahyia’s sister alleged that the family had been asked for payments, that officials travelled without relatives, and that a fake airline ticket had been issued to the deceased’s mother.
The Ministry clarified that government has assumed full responsibility for travel arrangements for two nominated family members and a pathologist to Latvia to support investigations. “At no time has the Ministry, or any government official acting on its behalf, demanded or received any form of payment from the family,” it stressed.
Officials explained that the trip, initially scheduled for January 31, 2026, was delayed due to visa processing challenges and the family’s inability to submit all required documents on time. “Upon receipt of the outstanding documents, the Ministry promptly facilitated their submission to the concerned Embassy,” the statement noted.
The Ministry also addressed claims regarding the deceased’s mother going to the airport with bloggers, saying the document she carried was not a confirmed airline ticket, but merely an itinerary generated exclusively to support the visa application process.
Warning against misinformation, the Ministry said, “The circulation of misinformation on a matter of this gravity is deeply regrettable and will not be countenanced.”
Nana Agyei Ahyia, a student of Riga Technical University in Latvia, died under circumstances that have sparked public concern and calls for transparency. The Ministry assured that it continues to engage relevant institutions in Latvia to establish the facts surrounding his death.
“The Ministry reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and to the pursuit of justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia,” the release added.
The Ministry urged the public to rely on verified information and allow diplomatic processes to run their course in the search for the truth.
