Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno toured selected polling centres in Accra on Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held its presidential primary to elect a flagbearer.

The IGP began his monitoring exercise in the Korle Klottey Constituency, where he visited the YMCA polling centre at Klottey Korle to observe the voting process and assess security arrangements on the ground.

The visit formed part of broader efforts by the Ghana Police Service to guarantee a calm, orderly and credible exercise after the NPP designated the Police as the sole security agency for the primaries.

More than 211,000 delegates were expected to vote at over 300 polling centres across the country.

Five aspirants contested the race: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong; and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The election was closely watched, as it determined the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general election and signalled the NPP’s direction after its loss in the 2024 polls.

Ahead of the vote, the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee had directed that only uniformed officers of the Ghana Police Service provide security at polling centres, collation points and all activities linked to the primaries.

The party said intelligence reports suggested the possible deployment of unauthorised operatives and warned that such actions could compromise the integrity of the process.

National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, earlier said the party expected the Police to strictly enforce the directive to ensure a peaceful and transparent contest.

The Ghana Police Service, for its part, had assured delegates and the public of its preparedness to maintain law and order throughout the exercise as voting and counting progressed nationwide.
