Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, has formally presented her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Charles III at St James’s Palace, officially beginning her diplomatic assignment in London.

The ceremony took place on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, and underscored the long-standing historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom, which date back decades.

Beyond the protocol, the moment carried special significance for Ghana’s diplomatic history.

Madam Benson becomes the first woman to serve as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK since independence in 1957, marking a major milestone in the country’s foreign service.

Her presentation also broke another long-standing tradition at the Palace.

She is the first High Commissioner to be formally received by the British monarch at St James’s Palace since 1910, when the last such ceremony was held during the reign of King Edward VII.

The development highlights renewed engagement between Accra and London, with expectations that Madam Benson’s tenure will deepen cooperation in trade, education, culture and governance between the two countries.

Officials say her appointment reflects Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations while advancing inclusive leadership within its diplomatic corps.

With the formalities completed, the High Commissioner is expected to begin a series of engagements aimed at expanding Ghana-UK collaboration across key sectors.
