President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the Akweteyman Central Mosque in the Okaikwei North Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, bringing to completion a decade-long project.

The mosque, which took 10 years to complete, witnessed accelerated construction from April 2025 and was finally completed in September 2025 after receiving additional support from President Mahama.

In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the President paid tribute to the late Imam Ali of Akweteyman for his immense contribution towards the project.

He recalled that last year, contractors identified serious structural defects in the building’s foundation and pillars, and advised that they be reinforced before construction could safely continue.

According to President Mahama, work on the project only resumed after engineers were satisfied with the structural integrity of the mosque.

The President prayed that Allah would accept the prayers of all worshippers at the mosque and that the edifice would serve as a blessing to the people of Akweteyman and visitors alike.

He also expressed appreciation to all individuals who contributed to the project, singling out the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Madam Theresa Lardi Awuni, for her consistent involvement and support.

President Mahama noted that the mosque symbolises Ghana’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence among different religious groups, citing the presence of a Christian pastor at the ceremony as a demonstration of national unity.
