The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the Ghana Police Service will take full responsibility for security arrangements during its presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, with the military deployed only in Bawku at the request of the police due to the area’s unique security situation.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the party’s Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, said the Inspector-General of Police has assured the NPP of the Service’s readiness, with officers to be deployed at all voting centres nationwide.
According to him, police personnel will oversee security at voting, counting and collation centres to ensure a peaceful and orderly process. However, Bawku will receive additional military support after police commanders in the area requested reinforcement.
“Everywhere, the Ghana Police Service will be in charge. In all the voting centres there will be police personnel, except Bawku where the police themselves specifically asked for military support,” Mr Nimako explained.
He said the decision to deploy soldiers in Bawku is a preventive measure aimed at protecting delegates and electoral officers in an area that has experienced periodic security tensions.
Mr Nimako added that the party has engaged all presidential aspirants and their teams on issues of conduct and cooperation, noting that preparations are progressing smoothly.
“We have engaged our aspirants and all is on course, so we are hopeful of a peaceful and successful presidential primary on Saturday to elect a flagbearer who will lead us into victory in the 2028 election,” he stated.
The NPP Director of Elections stressed that the primaries will be decentralised, with voting taking place simultaneously across the country rather than at a single location. He said this makes security coordination critical and explains the close collaboration with the police.
“It is a decentralised process across the nation, and at the end of the primaries, the NPP will emerge stronger,” he added.
The NPP presidential primary is expected to attract keen interest as the party prepares to elect a flagbearer to lead it into the 2028 general elections, with security agencies positioned to ensure a calm and credible process nationwide, including special military reinforcement in Bawku.
