Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has mounted a strong defence of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful remains Ghana’s “economic messiah” and will prove his competence if given another mandate.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Agyemang said criticisms of the NPP’s economic record and Dr. Bawumia’s stewardship overlook the extraordinary impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted economies across the world.

“He is still the economic messiah and we believe in him that if he is elected again, he will take the economy from wherever it is handed over to him to a different level,” Dr. Agyemang stated.

According to him, public judgment of political performance often shifts sharply after electoral defeat, even when earlier progress is ignored.

“NPP did well in power except that once you lose an election, there is so much talk. It is like the Black Stars, when they win, we are all happy, but when they lose, nothing they did pleases anyone,” he said.

Dr. Agyemang noted that before the outbreak of COVID-19, Ghana’s economy under the NPP was on a positive trajectory, with strong growth indicators and expanding opportunities.

“Before the COVID pandemic, things were going well. Then it hit the global economy and no economic system escaped the challenge. Every system came to a halt,” he explained.

He described the pandemic as an unprecedented event in modern times, recalling that the last comparable global health crisis was the Spanish Flu over a century ago.

“The last time a pandemic came was the Spanish flu, over 100 years ago. So political actors and opponents took advantage, and things turned out the way they did,” he added.

Dr. Agyemang argued that it would be unfair to blame Ghana’s economic downturn solely on Dr. Bawumia, given the worldwide disruption caused by COVID-19.

“Before COVID, NPP was doing very well and making progress. COVID came and pushed everything down the line. So why should we blame the economic crisis on Bawumia?” he questioned.

He maintained that Dr. Bawumia’s economic vision and policy direction remain relevant and capable of restoring growth.

The comments of the former Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat come barely three days before the NPP presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

To Dr. Agyemang, the 2024 Presidential Candidate remains the NPP’s surest best for victory in the 2028 election.
