The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has averted a potential fire or explosion following an accident involving a fallen diesel tanker at Nsawam Okanta on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The incident involved a DAF XF diesel tanker with registration number GC 1084-11, which fell and spilled fuel along the highway, posing a serious risk to motorists, nearby residents and property.
Firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station swiftly responded to the scene, applying foam and water to cool the tanker, suppress vapours and control the diesel spillage.
The timely intervention successfully prevented the outbreak of fire or an explosion.
The Police also played a key role by securing the area and preventing members of the public from siphoning fuel, while a recovery team worked to safely overturn the tanker and tow it to a secure location, restoring safety along the stretch.
No casualties were recorded.
Following the incident, the GNFS cautioned the public against fuel siphoning, describing the practice as both illegal and extremely dangerous due to the high risk of fire, explosion and loss of life.
The Service urged residents and road users to stay clear of accident scenes and allow emergency responders to handle such situations professionally.
