The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a journalist and several civilians by military personnel in the Walewale Township.

Reports indicate that soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a military truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale stopped in Walewale on Monday, January 26, and reportedly assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General, along with other civilians, without provocation.

According to the MP, the soldiers also damaged property at the scene, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, leaving residents in fear and apprehension.

He alleged that the journalist was detained for over four hours and that images on his mobile phone documenting his injuries were destroyed.

Checks at the Walewale District Police Command and the local military unit suggested that neither authority had been informed of, nor had authorised, the actions of the soldiers involved, the MP added.

Recalling a similar incident in February 2025, he noted that the same journalist, along with two others and several civilians, had been allegedly assaulted, with victims sustaining injuries without receiving compensation.

Rejecting claims that the assault was linked to recent bus attacks, Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama insisted no such incidents had occurred recently. He emphasised that residents have largely remained calm and law-abiding, despite frustrations over the handling of the Bawku conflict and the lack of security escorts for travellers.

Condemning what he described as a pattern of military brutality in the area, the MP warned that such conduct, if unchecked, could spark dangerous military-civilian confrontations.

He has called on the Acting Minister of Defence to investigate the incident immediately and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The military has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
