Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying the party is overly focused on the internal processes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) while neglecting what he describes as a looming and potentially divisive leadership battle within its own camp.
Addressing journalists on Monday, January 26, the Effutu MP argued that the NDC’s attention is misplaced, insisting that the governing party faces unresolved internal competition that could soon generate serious tension.
“The NDC is busy talking about us, but what they have forgotten is that they also have a leadership contest awaiting them. Theirs is likely to be messy,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin pointed to the activities of the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, suggesting that his nationwide “thank you” tours may reflect early manoeuvring ahead of the party’s flagbearer race.
He further alleged that influential actors within government are already positioning preferred candidates.
“Asiedu Nketia is always on a so-called ‘thank you’ tour, and it looks like the government also has its own preferred candidate. Jubilee House, too, has its own preferred candidate for flagbearer,” Afenyo-Markin claimed.
According to the Minority Leader, these developments will eventually expose internal cracks in the ruling party and draw attention away from the opposition.
“So their turn will come soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, he sought to assure the public of cohesion within the NPP, saying the party would rally behind whoever wins its internal presidential contest.
He disclosed that NPP Members of Parliament have committed themselves to supporting the eventual flagbearer after the January 31 election.
“What we want to state clearly is that in our party, the NPP, after 31st January, those of us in Parliament have vowed to unite and support whoever emerges as the winner of the presidential race,” he said.
