Government has announced far-reaching measures to strengthen the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), including the construction of new military bases, the establishment of additional units and the acquisition of modern equipment to address emerging security threats.
President John Dramani Mahama disclosed that two forward operating bases have already been completed in the northern sector, with funding secured to complete four additional bases by the end of 2026.
He explained that the facilities will play a critical role in strengthening border security, improving rapid response capabilities and enhancing overall operational readiness.
In addition, the President announced plans to establish two new military units in the Oti and Central Regions to improve nationwide security coverage and response capacity.
These efforts will be complemented by an ongoing recruitment exercise expected to increase the strength of the Armed Forces by 12,000 personnel over the next four years.
As part of a comprehensive modernisation drive, the government will retool all three services of the Armed Forces. Planned acquisitions include armoured personnel carriers, strategic drones and advanced communication systems, as well as the establishment of a modern cyber and electronic warfare centre at the Tamale Air Force Base.

Further upgrades will see the Ghana Navy receive offshore patrol vessels to enhance maritime security, while the Ghana Air Force will be equipped with four Eurocopter helicopters and an executive jet to strengthen air operations and logistics support.
Touching on the national security situation, President Mahama noted that Ghana continues to enjoy relative peace despite isolated tensions in areas such as Bawku, Alavanyo, Nkonya, Nkwanta and Nanton.

He attributed the prevailing calm to the professionalism and vigilance of the Armed Forces under operations including Operation Gongong and Operation Maida Buuri.

The President assured that the government would continue to work closely with security agencies, traditional authorities and local communities to consolidate peace and stability across the country.
The announcements were made at the 2025 End-of-Year West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASSA), which brought together the Commander-in-Chief, ministers, the military high command and personnel to reflect on the achievements and future direction of the Ghana Armed Forces.
